Talks on the horizon as Reds keep tabs on Crystal Palace star

Liverpool Remain Interested in Guehi Formal Talks with Crystal Palace Expected Soon

Liverpool’s pursuit of Marc Guehi may have gone quiet in recent weeks. However, sources close to the club suggest that interest in the Crystal Palace defender is very much alive and discussions could be initiated soon. It’s now been over a month since initial reports surfaced linking Guehi with a potential move to Anfield. While many fans hoped for quick progress, several factors most notably the tragic passing of Diogo Jota, have understandably slowed movement on the transfer front.

Despite the lull, those behind the scenes at Liverpool have not abandoned their interest in the England international. According to BBC Sport journalist Sami Mokbel, the Reds are expected to re-engage with Palace soon in a more formal capacity. Speaking on The Redmen TV, Mokbel provided an update on the situation, affirming that the Merseyside club still view Guehi as a priority target.

“The interest hasn’t gone away,” Mokbel said. “From what I know, nothing concrete has been discussed club-to-club just yet. But that’s likely to change before long.

”While Liverpool haven’t submitted an official offer, it seems that groundwork is quietly being laid behind the scenes. Guehi is believed to be open to the move, a natural sentiment considering the pull of playing for a club of Liverpool’s stature. However, any deal will hinge on reaching common ground with Palace, who are known for being tough negotiators.

Palace are reportedly valuing the 24-year-old centre-back at around £65 million, a fee that many insiders believe is overly ambitious given his contract situation. With Guehi’s current deal set to expire in just over a year and no new extension on the horizon, there is a general expectation that Palace may have to settle for a lower sum.

Nevertheless, Mokbel cautioned that Liverpool should avoid antagonizing Palace with a lowball bid, suggesting that a respectful, open dialogue would be the wiser approach.

“Palace aren’t the kind of club you want to upset in negotiations,” he said. “It’s important for Liverpool to approach this properly speak directly, discuss valuations, and try to find middle ground. Throwing in a low offer just to start the process might backfire and create unnecessary tension.

”It’s clear that Liverpool’s recruitment team is aware of the intricacies involved. Having likely already held preliminary discussions with Guehi’s representatives, the club will understand what’s required to make the deal happen from the player’s side. The challenge now lies in navigating Palace’s position and structuring an offer that works for all parties.

From Liverpool’s perspective, a fee in the region of £40 million appears more reasonable and could align with the club’s current transfer strategy. Interestingly, a significant portion of that fee could effectively be offset by the recent sale of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen, which reportedly brought in around £35 million.

The idea would be to reinvest smartly and strengthen the defence with a player who is not only Premier League-proven but also entering the prime years of his career. Guehi, who captains Palace and has earned England caps, fits the profile Liverpool are seeking as they aim to reinforce the backline ahead of the new season.

However, the Reds will have to tread carefully. Palace, while under some pressure due to the contract situation, are not expected to be easily swayed and will look to extract maximum value for one of their key players. Their stance is also likely influenced by the general inflation of prices in the transfer market, particularly for homegrown talents.

Liverpool’s interest in Marc Guehi remains very much alive, even if it hasn’t been the subject of daily headlines. Formal contact with Crystal Palace is anticipated in the near future, and while the deal won’t be straightforward, there is growing confidence that an agreement can be reached provided the Reds handle negotiations with the delicacy and respect they demand.

Patience may be required, but the groundwork for a potential move is quietly taking shape behind the scenes.
