Taylor Swift’s assertion that her three-night performance at Anfield set a new attendance record for the stadium has sparked some controversy.
Addressing the packed crowd on Thursday, Swift shared, “Just as I was about to step on stage, I was informed that tonight, you’ve accomplished something remarkable. You’ve shattered the stadium’s all-time attendance record. Isn’t it thrilling to know this room has never been so full? I find that incredibly exciting.”
Despite the widespread acclaim for her Eras Tour stop in Merseyside, which generated significant revenue for the club, the claim about breaking attendance records does not hold up under scrutiny. Reports indicate that over 55,000 fans attended each night, yet this figure falls short of the highest numbers seen at Anfield.
In comparison, a crowd of 60,090 watched Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in April of this year. The stadium’s historical attendance peak remains the 61,905 spectators who witnessed Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over Wolves in the FA Cup back in 1952.
With no current plans for further expansion of Anfield following the renovations of the Main Stand and the Anfield Road end, surpassing this record seems unlikely. While Swift may have set a new high for non-football events at the venue, the attendance numbers from her concerts still do not compare to the record-setting football crowds.
As Swift continues her tour with upcoming stops in Cardiff, London’s Wembley Stadium, and Dublin’s Aviva Stadium, it’s clear that there remains a considerable gap between her concert attendance figures and Anfield’s historic highs.
