Trent Alexander-Arnold Weighs In on Preferred Successor to Gareth Southgate as England Manager

Trent Alexander-Arnold expressed his surprise at the possibility of his former Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, succeeding Gareth Southgate as the new Three Lions boss. SoutLionsresigned two days after England’s 2-1 loss to Germany in the Euro 2024 final, marking their second consecutive defeat in a Euro final.

The resignation has fueled intense speculation about Southgate’s successor, with names like Graham Potter, Eddie Howe, and Lee Carsley frequently mentioned. Although Klopp’s name has surfaced as a potential candidate, Alexander-Arnold remains doubtful. Reflecting on his time under Klopp, he told the Daily Mail:

“I enjoyed every moment working with him; we shared amazing memories and built an incredible relationship. If he were to take the job, we’d pick up where we left off. However, I would be surprised if he did. When he stepped down from Liverpool, he seemed to be enjoying his time off, so it would be a huge surprise if he returned to management so soon.”

Klopp, who ended his nearly decade-long tenure at Liverpool citing burnout, is expected to take a year off from coaching.

Alexander-Arnold also praised Southgate’s tenure with England, highlighting the manager’s achievements in leading the team to at least the quarter-finals in four major tournaments, including the finals of the last two Euros. During Euro 2024, Alexander-Arnold initially played in midfield before transitioning to a substitute role in the knockout stages, where he notably scored the winning penalty in the Round-of-16 match against Slovakia.

He spoke highly of Southgate, saying:

“I am grateful for every opportunity and the memories we’ve shared. I believe Gareth is underrated. The England manager’s job is one of the toughest, with constant judgment and speculation. Despite this, he created a united team environment and handled criticism remarkably, leading us to another final.”

England’s defeat in the Euro 2024 final extended their 58-year wait for a major title since their 1966 FIFA World Cup victory.
