Pepe Reina and Alberto Moreno are on the brink of nearly identical summer transfers, which might come as a surprise considering their careers. Reina, now 41, left Liverpool a decade ago, while Moreno, 32, departed in 2019.
Interestingly, they barely overlapped at Liverpool. Reina exited in the summer of 2014, just as Moreno signed. They later reunited in Spain in 2022, playing together at Villarreal. Both are now free agents after their recent release from the club.
However, their free-agent status won’t last long. According to Marca, Fabrizio Romano, and TuttomercatoWeb, Serie A’s Como 1907 is set to sign both players to one-year deals to bring experience to their squad. Como, newly promoted to Serie A after 21 years, boasts high-profile investors like Thierry Henry, with Dennis Wise serving as club president and Cesc Fabregas as assistant manager to Osian Roberts.
Reina will join Como as a backup goalkeeper, while Pau Lopez is expected to sign from Marseille. Despite his age, Reina’s professionalism is evident as he continues to play at 41. Last season, he made 12 appearances for Villarreal, mostly in cup competitions, down from 32 appearances in the 2022/23 season.
Moreno, on the other hand, played 33 games last season after recovering from his second ACL injury, up from 28 the previous season. His move to Como marks his first stint in Italian football.
It’s an exciting move for both former Liverpool players, and Moreno, in particular, will enjoy his new Italian base.
