This afternoon at Old Trafford, Luis Diaz once again found the back of the net for Liverpool, just as he did in this same fixture five months ago.
The Colombian winger put the visitors ahead in the 35th minute with a well-taken header from close range. However, the goal was the result of some brilliant teamwork, with two key moments of brilliance leading up to it.
It all began when Ryan Gravenberch capitalized on a poor pass from Casemiro. Gravenberch quickly took control, driving forward from just past the halfway line to the edge of the penalty area as Manchester United’s defence struggled to keep up with his pace and intent.
Upon reaching the final third, Gravenberch smartly passed the ball to Mo Salah, who delivered a perfectly timed, first-time cross into the box. The ball dipped towards the far post, where both Dominik Szoboszlai and Luis Diaz were racing to meet it. As the ball hung in the air, Szoboszlai showed great awareness and chose to let it go, leaving Diaz free to head it into the net at the last moment.
While Diaz deservedly gets the praise for the goal, it wouldn’t have been possible without the crucial contributions of Gravenberch’s powerful run and Szoboszlai’s intelligent decision-making.
