(WATCH) Sels avoids embarrassment as Forest goalkeeper narrowly avoids comical early mistake against Liverpool.

Matz Sels produced a few key saves to deny Liverpool in the first half at Anfield this afternoon.

However, the Nottingham Forest goalkeeper nearly handed the home team an unexpected lead with what could have been a highly embarrassing own goal.

The incident occurred when Luis Diaz sent a looping header toward the back post that seemed harmless. It should have been an easy catch for the Belgian, but instead, he fumbled it awkwardly behind him. Sels quickly spun around, turning 180 degrees in a panic, checking if the ball had crossed the line.

Referee Michael Oliver glanced at the goal-line technology on his wrist to determine whether a goal could be awarded. Fortunately for Forest, the ball hadn’t crossed the line, giving their keeper a lucky escape. Liverpool came agonizingly close but were denied, as the moment passed without incident.

Just moments earlier, Sels had made an impressive save, stopping a powerful shot from Alexis Mac Allister. Despite that solid effort, his near-mishap with Diaz’s header left him sweating until the ball was confirmed to have stayed out.

In the 39th minute, Sels was likely the most relieved man inside Anfield, escaping what could have been a very comical and costly mistake. His earlier saves kept Forest in the game, but his fumble nearly handed Liverpool a chance to capitalize.

Sels’ awkward moment was captured during the game, broadcast by beIN SPORTS and later shared by @kimbra1994_ on X. Though the goalkeeper redeemed himself, it was a reminder that even top-tier professionals can have moments of panic under pressure.
