Liverpool’s recruitment team assesses Dutch wonderkid as a long-term option for defensive role

Liverpool is reportedly keeping a close watch on Jorrel Hato, a rising young Dutch star, as part of broader strategic plans to strengthen one area in Arne Slot’s squad.

The Liverpool head coach, who already benefits from a solid Dutch presence in the squad through players like Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and Ryan Gravenberch, may be interested in further tapping into the Netherlands’ talent pool by targeting Hato. This move would aim to deepen Liverpool’s defensive options and bring a younger dimension to the squad, adding another Dutch talent to its ranks by 2025.

According to Graeme Bailey for TBR Football, Liverpool’s scouts have been tracking the Ajax defender throughout this season, with the 18-year-old’s performance capturing considerable attention. Hato, who has already gained admirers beyond Merseyside, has reportedly also sparked interest from Arsenal. His style and consistent play at Ajax make him a standout option among young defenders in Europe, and he is emerging as a serious candidate for Liverpool’s future left-back plans. However, he isn’t the only name under consideration; Liverpool is also looking at Premier League left-backs Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolves and Milos Kerkez, with Ait-Nouri rumored to be Liverpool’s preferred target for this role.

The recruitment strategy appears aimed at finding long-term reinforcement for the left-back position, a spot where the team currently relies on Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas. Although Robertson has been a reliable and important leader within the squad, some recent performances have led to speculation about his longevity in the role. At 30, Robertson still has plenty to offer, but Liverpool’s boardroom is already looking ahead to ensure a smooth succession when the time comes for a younger left-back to step up.

Hato, despite his youth, already boasts an impressive range of abilities that make him an appealing option. Having made 78 appearances for Ajax, he brings significant first-team experience, which is quite a feat for a teenager in one of Europe’s more competitive leagues. Interestingly, Hato was only five years old when Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson signed with the Reds back in 2011, a detail that underscores his youthfulness yet seasoned presence on the field.

This season, Hato has showcased a strong attacking side to his game, with three goals and three assists in just 17 appearances under Ajax coach Francesco Farioli. He’s proving to be effective both defensively and offensively, highlighting his potential as a modern left-back. Beyond his contributions in front of goal, his passing skills and physical prowess have stood out, with advanced metrics placing him in the top tier of left-backs across Europe for pass completion and aerial duel success. According to FBref, he ranks within the top 1% for pass completion and the top 9% for winning aerial duels, achievements that underline his technical and physical capabilities on the pitch.

While it may not be urgent to replace Robertson, Liverpool appears to be planning for the future by scouting players who can eventually fill his role. Robertson’s experience and leadership still make him a valuable asset, but it’s clear that the club is thinking strategically about the next generation. Hato’s well-rounded skill set—encompassing defensive reliability, passing accuracy, and attacking contribution—positions him as a strong candidate for a future in Liverpool’s defense.

As Liverpool continues to monitor Hato’s progress, it is becoming evident that the club’s recruitment team is focused on finding a young, versatile left-back who could secure the position for years to come. Whether Hato becomes the chosen one or if Liverpool turns to one of their other targets like Ait-Nouri, the club is preparing to ensure long-term stability in its defensive lineup.
