Xabi Alonso admitted that his efforts to prepare Bayer Leverkusen for the intensity of Anfield fell short after their 4-0 Champions League defeat to Liverpool.
The Spanish manager, who returned to Liverpool as an opponent this time, had hoped his knowledge of Anfield’s electric atmosphere might help his team stand strong, but the iconic stadium’s impact proved too much.
In his post-match comments, Alonso reflected on how difficult it is to ready a team for the atmosphere at Anfield. He acknowledged that, while many things in football can be analyzed and prepared for, the unique energy created between Liverpool’s fans and players is hard to match.
“We tried to prepare for this, of course,” he explained. “There are so many things you can explain in advance, but controlling this specific atmosphere – it’s just incredibly difficult. Liverpool’s players feel it. When the crowd builds, it’s like an extra charge for them. Suddenly, the players know it’s time to turn things up. They feel that backing, and they go.”
This surge of energy was particularly clear as Liverpool scored twice in quick succession, fueling the crowd and overwhelming Leverkusen’s defences. Alonso noted that defending against Liverpool in those moments is “not easy,” and that, despite all their efforts to prepare, his side struggled to hold the line under the pressure. He pointed out how Brighton had faced a similar challenge against Liverpool just days earlier, also conceding during the high-energy periods sparked by the crowd.
Alonso spoke openly about how hard it is to translate that atmosphere into mere words, let alone control it from the sidelines. “You can try to describe it, but feeling it and managing it on the pitch is much harder,” he remarked.
For Alonso, the night was an emotional mix of admiration and frustration. Anfield remains a special place for the former Liverpool midfielder, who was warmly welcomed back by fans. Reflecting on his return, he said, “I am grateful for the bond I still have with this club and with the people here, even after so many years. The reception was lovely, and it’s always nice to be back.”
However, the heavy loss left a bittersweet taste. “Of course, I would have loved to enjoy it more with a better result,” Alonso admitted. “One part of it is the match itself, but another part is the reception. The bond I have here is something I’m thankful for, even if it feels tough after a night like this.”
Alonso’s name had come up as a possible successor for Jurgen Klopp before the club ultimately chose Arne Slot as their next manager. Though he didn’t secure the role, Alonso still speaks of Liverpool with fondness and respect, and it was clear that, despite the loss, he holds Anfield in high regard.
Reflecting on the crowd’s power, Slot himself echoed Alonso’s thoughts, saying, “When you work or play here, you can experience some incredible evenings. The atmosphere is just something else. I thought it was impressive last Saturday, but today it felt even more intense.”
